(380) Distraction – 3

There wasn’t much of a panic when Gnore ran out into the stands.

At least, not at first.  The Dweorvkin had striped down to what amounted to a loin cloth, rubbed some more dirt and mud on his face and body, and raised his weapons menacingly at the crowd.  Some of the nearby folk even seemed more amused than scared.  They raised their drinks and laughed with their neighbors about the sideshow attraction.  The few that did start to panic had their fears quickly quelled by the relative coolness exuded by the others.

Peeking through the partially open door, Kre looked helplessly back at Henric and shrugged.  This was most certainly not going according to plan.

“Drunk dumb folk,” Henric muttered.  “You need to rile them up.  Plan B.”  He pushed at Kre and gestured towards the door.

Kre took a deep breath and nodded.  He had hoped to avoid participating directly, but he knew Henric was right.  They needed to make the crowd react somehow and soon.

He stepped out after Gnore, who had run to the edge of the spectator area, where it overlooked the sand-pit of the arena below, and started spouting off curses in his native tongue.

“Prisoner escape!” Kre yelled, hoping to draw out more concern from the audience.  “Crazed murderers have escaped!”  He stopped and pointed at Gnore, “Oh no!  There’s one now!”

A few folks caught on to what Kre was saying and started to murmur amongst themselves, pointing with their free hands… that is, the hands not holding a flagon of alcohol.  A few folks got up discreetly and started to move away, but it was far from the stampede that they really wanted to force the necessary distraction.  Kre glanced up and noticed a couple of guards stationed near the top deck were starting to look their way and gesturing to each other.

Kre heard Gnore curse at the group around him as he knocked two flagons out of people’s hands.  That seemed to get more attention from those gathered around him and there started to be more gasps and some light shrieks.

“Run, you fools!” Kre yelled, hoping to incite the crowd to finally act.  There was more movement this time as a wide circle opened up around Gnore.  Some folks even started to make their way up the stands, either to other seating or towards the exit.  It was hard to tell since they didn’t seem in much of a rush.

Now that Kre was looking around, he noted that the cavern was far larger than he thought initially.  There were probably over two hundred spectators in stone tiers that made up the seats in a c-shape around the arena.  The final part was an enclosed area that was likely the seating for the very important people.

The area they were currently in was just left of center if you were looking out from the VIP section, and only about thirty folks were currently being affected by their distraction.

Henric stepped out then, clutching at his side and raised a hand to Gnore, “There he is… he killed the sergeant!”  He then stumbled to his knees and cried out in pain.
